New Rice Blast Resistance Test: Expanding Our Marker-Assisted Breeding Services

At CSP Labs, we are always looking for ways to support plant breeders with advanced testing solutions. That’s why we are excited to announce our newly available test for Rice Blast Resistance. It is a cost-effective SNP-based test designed to detect rice-blast resistant Pi-Ta haplogroups, an important factor in rice blast disease resistance. This addition to our testing services empowers breeders and seed companies to optimize their screening programs.

Rice blast, caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most devastating diseases in rice production. It can lead to significant yield losses, making disease resistance an essential trait in breeding programs. Our new test specifically identifies which haplogroup a sample belongs to, helping breeders determine if their material carries resistance traits derived from the widely used cultivar ‘Katy’. Two of the five haplogroups identified with our test confer resistance, providing valuable insights for targeted breeding efforts.

Our approach utilizes KASP (Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR) and Genotyping by Amplicon Sequencing (GBAS) to deliver fast and reliable results. Traditional inoculation-based evaluations can be time-consuming, but our molecular approach provides breeders with a much faster alternative, allowing them to make breeding decisions more efficiently.

For over 30 years, CSP Labs has been a trusted leader in agricultural testing services. As an ISO 17025-accredited and NSHS-accredited laboratory, we specialize in seed health, plant health, and genetics testing services.

Submitting samples is easy—we accept plant material (seed chips or leaf punches) and purified DNA samples for analysis. If you have any questions about our rice blast test, contact us to discuss how we can support your breeding and research goals.
